There is a long tradition of horse racing in the region. The first ever steeplechase took place in 1752 between the church steeples of Buttervant and Donerail, just a few miles from Mallow. In 1777, six consecutive days of racing were on offer in the Mallow area, "all to be run according to the King's Plate articles". With the demise of Cork Park in 1917, the need for a new racecourse in Ireland's largest county was apparent. Mallow, formed at the instigation of and under the control of Lieutentant Colonel F F MacCabe, commenced racing in 1924. The racecourse re-opened at Easter 1997, following a £7 million refurbishment backed by the Irish Horseracing Authority, the Irish Government and local private and industry sponsorship.
