Thurles, situated in the sporting county of Tipperary, is celebrated as the centre of the Gaelic Athletic Association. It is also the heart of the famous Scarteen hunting county. Earliest records show a three day meeting in June 1732. In October 1760, there was a six day meeting .
The February meeting is renowned as a major trial for the forthcoming National Hunt Festival meetings at Cheltenham, Fairyhouse and Punchestown.
